It has Numerical Symbolism
Hebrew letters have numerical equivalency and this has become an endless source of fascination for Jewish mystics. Outside of fundamentalism, Judaism isn’t a literalist tradition, and therefore numbers are always symbolic, never literal. Yet how we love symbolism! The Hebrew word chai (life) is the numerical equivalent of 18, so Jews almost always give money in multiples of 18. The ancient Greek philosophers, among others, tied philosophy intimately to math, and Pythagoras believed that the universe is constructed through and explained by numbers. Yet in Judaism, language, numbers, creation... it is all intertwined.
