21st Century Challenges

Studying the weekly Torah portion enables her to more deeply understand and connect with Biblical stories and Jewish teachings and how they apply to 21st century challenges of hunger, food access and growing food sustainably. She explores questions such as: how our society can grow, prepare and eat foods that are worthy of a blessing? How do we ensure that these foods are accessible and affordable to all, rather than a select few? How do people of faith reconcile the practices in their daily lives that might be out of sync with religious teachings? When Sarah visits a kosher supermarket near her house, she find aisles filled with highly processed and unhealthy cookies, cakes and drinks. They are certified kosher but she asks if these are these grown and processed in accord with Jewish values about protecting the Earth, workers and our health? Are they really worthy of a blessing?
