4 Ways to Remember God is Great

There is no denying God’s power and greatness. The Bible shows it over and over again. That does not mean, however, that Christians do not sometimes forget His incredible power. Sometimes those moments of forgetfulness come during a particularly difficult time in a person’s life. They are struggling. Perhaps they lost their job or feel that their marriage is falling apart. They have been praying and know that God has the power to fix their problems, but when the challenges do not go away, they begin to wonder if God can fix those problems at all. The person may also be struggling with another person’s situation. They may be in a position where someone they love is in a seemingly hopeless situation such as a warzone or an area that was leveled by a natural disaster, and they find themselves wondering why God did not stop this terrible thing if He is so powerful.

Sometimes it is not a life-altering event that causes people to doubt or forget about God’s incredible power. It may be that there has seemingly been no reason to think about it. Everyday life may have gotten in the way, or a person may have been so successful at solving their own problems that they begin to subconsciously believe that they have all the power they need. In any of these instances, it is good to have a reminder of how incredible God really is. Here are four ways to remember God is great every day.

If someone took all the evidence of God’s greatness out of the Bible, there would not be much of a book left. A few pages from Chronicles, perhaps, that simply list a genealogy with no explanation as to why those names are important. The lines describing the materials used in the construction of the Temple might be left as well, but there would not be much else remaining of the Good Book. Cover to cover, it is full of tales of God’s greatness. As such, reading Scripture is a good way for you to remind yourself that God is great. If you need a little extra push, focus on the stories that show the full extent of God’s abilities. Read Exodus and the freeing of the Israelites or Genesis with the creation of the world or the story of the flood. If you prefer the New Testament, focus on Jesus’ miracles and resurrection.

Go Outside

If you look out the window, what do you see? If you see trees and birds, remember that God made those. If you are trapped in a city, look up and see the sky. God made that, too. If you are someone lucky enough to have a view of the ocean from your office, know that the endless expanse of water is God’s creation as well.

The natural world has a way of humbling people. The Grand Canyon has rendered people truly speechless since it was discovered. The ocean is known for making people acutely aware of how small they really are in this world. Little, however, is as indicative of God’s greatness as the open sky at night. The sight of millions of stars burning thousands of light years away can be enough to make a soul quail. Remember, God made every one of those stars, all the planets that surround them, all the space in between them and the tiny blue planet you are standing on.

Biblical history is of course an easy way to get a fix of God’s greatness, but secular history is riddled with evidence of God’s incredible power as well. If you need a reminder that God’s greatness is still at work in recent history, go looking for incredible coincidences and impossible escapes in history. Read about the Battle of Long Island. The Continental Army was saved because of an unexpected and extremely fortuitous fog that lasted just long enough for Washington and his men to escape. Check out the story of David B. Parkinson who invented an electromechanical device for directing antiaircraft guns that were capable of taking out the so-far unbreakable flying Nazi V-I buzz bomb. Parkinson, however, did not make guns. He was working on recording equipment and dreamed about the schematics. Even though neither he nor his friends at Bell Labs “knew anything about guns, ballistics or fire control,” the gun had a 90 percent success rate.
