“When my grandfather, the rabbi of the little town of Schloppe, Germany, was brutally dragged away to a death camp with my grandmother and all the other practicing Jews of our town, I did not see God’s plan for my life,” writes Lewin, who remembers fleeing in the night with his parents after his grandparents’ home was ransacked by Nazi storm troopers and most of their neighbors were herded by yelling Nazis with snarling dogs off to military trucks, never to be seen again.
