Wine
The miracle of Jesus turning water into wine took place at a wedding feast, because wine has always been the essence of that old phrase, “Eat, drink and be merry.” Since that’s what weddings are about, wine became an invariable part of many traditional marriage ceremonies. In the famed novel Don Quixote, four hundred eighty gallons of wine were served at a reception.
Wine is not only a symbol of communion. It seals toasts, helps guests digest the meal, and endows the feast table with an aura of generosity and abundance that makes everyone feel honored. That makes them merry indeed.
