From Sea to Shining Sea!
This historic flag has 33 stars just like the one flying over Fort Sumter, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861, when the War Between the States broke out. The 33rd star was for Oregon. The 34th state, Kansas had just been admitted into the union -- but a newly designed flag with an additional star would not be unveiled until July 4, 1861. Although 11 southern states seceded, President Lincoln refused to have their stars officially removed from America's flag.
