Help Them Identify Their Blessings
As adults we take for granted and assume that our children completely understand what we’re saying. The words “be thankful” may come across as self-explanatory to you however they’re not as black and white for little ones. Take time to explain and point out the blessings your child already has and why they should be thankful. Showing your child what they have compared to others will help to put things into perspective and give them a better understanding of how things are different for each household.
Another way to explain blessings to your child is to have them donate their own book s and toys on a regular basis. Perhaps you can have your child go through his or her toys prior to a birthday celebration or Christmas and have them donate their gently used toys to other children in need. Donating items makes the whole ordeal real and adds a first person perspective to the situation so that they can better understand everything.
