5 Lies the Enemy Wants You to Believe About Infidelity

From the Garden of Eden, the enemy has sought to lure individuals and couples into his traps. He wants to weaken or destroy marriages, and he delights when couples are wounded in the process. There are a number of tools the enemy uses to sabotage your marriage and the foundation it stands on. Attacks from the enemy can really weaken marriage, leaving couples conflicted and emotionally detached. This sets the stage for spouses to look outside their marriage for the connection they feel is missing and can ultimately lead to infidelity. But that risk is significantly diminished when care is taken to guard your marriage. It’s imperative that you’re cognizant of the enemy’s schemes and that you surround your relationship with healthy boundaries. Here are five lies the enemy wants you to believe when infidelity attacks your marriage that you need to be mindful of.

Your spouse doesn’t really love you.

The enemy wants you to believe that your spouse doesn’t really love you to sabotage your marriage. He wants you to believe that you’re not good enough, attractive enough or smart enough to be loved. That’s a lie. No matter who you are or what you’ve done, you are worthy and capable of being loved. When you allow this idea to fester, it can also cause you to justify cheating. You may think “if my spouse doesn’t love me, then it’s OK for me to find or feel love from someone else.” This is another lie from the enemy that you should not buy into. If you have doubts or concerns related to your marriage, talk with your spouse before doing something irrational.

There’s someone greater out there for you other than your spouse.

Don’t allow the enemy to lead you to believe that the grass is greener on the other side. Despite the story you have playing in your head about your spouse, the truth is no one is perfect. We all have flaws. Leaving your marriage to find someone else would mean trading out one imperfect spouse for another imperfect spouse. If you’re thinking, “Well you just don’t know what my spouse has done,” pause for a moment and look at them through eyes of grace. Try to see them in the way God does. When you married your spouse, you committed to being with them for the rest of your life. Don’t allow the enemy to let you believe there is a back-up plan.

It’s not adultery if you don’t make it physical.

The enemy wants you to believe that it’s only adultery if the act is physical, but that couldn’t be further from the case. Jesus said that if you look upon a woman and lust after her, you have already committed adultery in your heart (Matthew 5:28). When infidelity attacks your marriage, the enemy wants you to believe that certain behaviors outside of physical intimacy with your spouse are acceptable, but these are just lies he is telling you to unravel your marriage. Stay away from pornography, dating websites, chat groups, chat lines, etc. You should never be looking outside of your marriage to have your needs fulfilled.
