As children, we grew up with movies with happy endings of marital happiness. We watched joyfully as the bride and groom recited their vows, wedding guests tossed rice, and the newlyweds rode off into their new lives. However, we never saw the true ending. Little did we know that the fade to black was the beginning of a journey filled with unseen moments of sadness, joy, heartbreak, and joy. In essence, these emotions are the things that life is made of, and marriage only intensifies these moments.

Journalist Mignon McLaughlin said, “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person,” and any couple that’s been married for a while will agree. The key to getting through flashes of marital stress is not to let the hard days separate you and your spouse but instead pull you together. In those times, marriage prayers can give reassurance and comfort that the stresses of life can test your marriage, but they can also make it stronger. Prayer creates an uninterrupted, life-changing connection with our heavenly Father; He loves to hear the prayers of His children. By praying to Him, He’ll be able to answer your heart’s desires. Here are some prayers for your spouse to recite during good and bad times.

A prayer for peace at home.

Dear Lord, I come to You now to pray that Your peace rules opulently in my home and marriage. Your word says that Your peace surpasses all understanding. Right now, I’m choosing to let Christ’s peace rest in my heart. As His peace rests in my heart, let it extend into my marriage. Thank you, Lord, for all Your blessings. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

A prayer for strength.

Heavenly Father, Your most superb command was to love each other and You. You gave marriage as a holy relationship that mirrors our relationship with You. Please, Father, show us how to put our pride and selfishness to the side and follow Your lead. Please help us be one with the spirit and look out for each other’s interests, valuing each other above ourselves. In our busy lives, help us set time aside to love each other from the heart as You have loved us. May the love we share provide an example to the world of how You love and gave Your life for them. Amen.

A prayer for healing.

Dear Lord, we thank You for the love You’ve placed in our hearts. We know that Your love can change and inspire the world. We hope that it encourages us to be kind with our words, considerate of others’ feelings, and worried about the needs and wishes of others. Please help us be forgiving and understanding of human failings and weaknesses. Build our trust and faith in You, and may Your wisdom guide our love and life. Bless our marriage with happiness and peace, and make our love fruitful for our joy and Your glory both in eternity and here. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for unity.

Our Father in heaven, we come to You to thank You for everything You’ve done and will do in our marriage and lives. We come to You right now asking for a deeper bond of unity in our marriage. Please allow us to remain a united front letting nothing come between us. Please help us find and work through anything that doesn’t please You so we can reach higher ranks of unity in our marriage, mentally, physically, and spiritually. We’re grateful and anxious to see the work of Your hands as we try to seek Your face every day. Lord, we love You and thank You for these things. Amen.

A prayer for marital growth.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for the blessings You’ve bestowed upon our lives. We ask that you help us to grow. Please grant us the wisdom to put our desires to the side for the things we know are good. Father, give us the strength to exercise the spaces of our lives where we lack. Give us something to focus on and the stamina to run. Please help us step out in faith instead of waiting for motivation to move us. We know what we need to do and what we should change, but we need self-discipline. Please give us the knowledge to grow and the power to move ahead. In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen.

A prayer for disagreements.

Dear Lord, thank You for bringing my spouse and all their beautiful qualities to me. Please help me find the good in my spouse daily and ignore any flaws. Lord, help us remain committed to each other and keep us away from temptation. Let Your wisdom guide us to a future that glorifies You and keeps us strong so we can work for Your kingdom. When we argue, please help us move toward each other with respect and humility. Strengthen our friendship and communication so our relationship can be stronger than ever. Assist us in guiding our children and family closer to You daily. Please help us put You first and, in turn, see our love grow. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer to stay connected.

Dear Lord, when we fight and disagree, help us to remember when we first met and the intense love we had. Help us love each other in pragmatic ways so nothing can come between us. Let our thoughts be gracious, and our words be kind. Please help us stay humble enough to ask forgiveness and intelligent enough to give freely. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

We may think that marriage is an easy journey, but any married couple will tell you the opposite is true. There may be days when you and your spouse disagree, and you may question why you got married in the first place. However, let these prayers ease your anger and remind you why you married your spouse in the first place. Allow God to grow your love and place Him at the head of your marriage.
