With everything going on in the world today, we feel more divided than ever. Democrats and republicans are at each other’s necks, baby boomers and millennials are at odds, and the color of your skin still is an issue. When you see the news stories you can feel like there is absolutely no hope left for America. There doesn’t seem to be any way for us to join back together as a strong country and progressively more forward.

Proverbs 14:34 says “Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin condemns any people.” The root of all problems in the world is sin. However, we choose to blame others – the president, our boss, the government – instead of sin. Weakness in leadership chosen from the people suggests a weak-minded society. Likewise, corruption in government points to corruption among the people.

There is an inherent lack of morals and values in America nowadays. Psalm 12:8 states “The wicked freely parade and prance about while evil is praised throughout the land.” Again, it can feel like we have no hope. What can you do? People want to help make America a better place, but they lack motivation, determination, and simply don’t know where to begin.

God can save America and make it a happier place for all of His children. However He needs us to help fight against the evil of sin. Any true child of God can testify of great satisfaction, of an abundant, full life they have by keeping themselves away from the filth of this world and choosing to focus on God instead.

God might not see America as a great nation, and only He knows whether it will be a part of His long-term agenda. At the end of the day, God will not base our salvation off of what country we chose to live in. He will not compare Russia to India, or America to Brazil. He is going to judge each of us as individuals despite the climate we came from. Individuals have to focus on changing themselves for the better, and less on the government. We have to look into our own lives.

This starts at the home. Parents, you must create a Godly home for your children. You can teach values and morals through example. How can you teach your children honesty if you yourself cheat on your tax returns or deal in bad business deals? Fathers, how can you teach your sons morals if you are engaging in extramarital affairs or obscene talk? How can you expect to keep your children away from drugs, when you yourself smoke cigarettes? It’s important to look inward on yourself and make appropriate adjustments. If you do not fully strive to live in God’s Way, then you are part of the problem in America. You must change yourself in order to give your children a chance as being better.

Regardless of what society promotes, you must choose to live a life of integrity. One of the best ways to make a difference is to live a life based on moral absolutes, and by letting honesty and integrity guide our decisions. Society changes as individuals change. Proverbs 11:3 adds, "The integrity of the upright will guide them." Combine integrity, wisdom, Scripture study, counsel, and prayer, and you'll have a better grasp on what God is calling you to do.

Prayer is more powerful than anything else you can do for our nation. There is real power in prayer and God knows it! We should not just rely on political power to make changes for us, but also rely on the power of God. Prayer is one of the most critical factors that have influenced America. Reaching out to others and praying with them, or for them, is a way to positively influence our country. When is the last time you prayed for someone you didn’t like?

Psalm 85:6 says “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” Will God choose to save America? Only He knows for sure. However, you can be saved and help your family be saved. You have to choose to focus on God, and fight back against the evil of sin. You can choose to make yourself a positive influence in American culture, or you can choose to contribute to the division.
