We look at milestones, such as marriage, a new job and babies being born, as markers along the way to somewhere, as if joy is always just out of reach. If only we could…. fill the blank. Find the right man. Get a bigger home. Have some extra money. Then we’ll be able to relax.
But really, being happy is a choice. Between appreciating the beautiful little moments and being grateful right where you are or holding back until that "big thing" comes through for us.
It’s not the big moments that matter most. It’s the tiny things, the time in the morning with your coffee before the kids wake up and the hustle and bustle begins. It’s reading a good book as your dog does a “drive-by” licks your knee-cap just because she loves you, then keeps going.
This is the not-so-dirty little secret of life: the "big thing" is now. Enjoy it as it unfolds like a rose in spring. One petal, one blessing, one tiny gift at a time.
Small Wonders
I praise You for the tiny glories
I am often too busy to see:
the irregular scallop of a maple leaf,
the impossible yellow of a dandelion,
the perfection of untrammeled snow.
For the scrap of sunlight the cat finds
in the darkened hallway,
I thank You.
For each sudden splendor:
the tickle of grass,
the dizzying dome of sky after rain,
the cozy smell of someone I love,
I exalt You.
Your beauty bursts my heart.
