5. Don’t Self-Medicate.
“We have to focus on the psychological or spiritual pain,” continues Murphey. “This is where most of us struggle. We can call it poor self-image, lack of self-esteem, or low self-worth, but all those terms come down to about the same thing. Too often we simply don’t feel good about ourselves. We feel alone, as if we don’t belong anywhere, or feelings of worthlessness trouble us. That’s bad enough, but we then compensate by self-medicating. The pain is so great that we just don’t know what to do with it, so we try to block it out.”
