Don’t Worry Yourself Sick
Americans spend billions of dollars every year coping with stress. From popping anti-anxiety pills to paying masseurs to stroke and pummel us, much of our lives are devoted to alleviating stress. After all, research has shown that stress contributes to numerous medical conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, gastrointestinal issues and insomnia. But Jesus Christ came up with the notion of stress more than 2,000 years ago (Matthew 6:25-6:27). Urging his followers to let go of anxiety, he says: “Look at the birds of the air: that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?”
