It’s hard to know what to say when you suspect someone is suffering from depression. You might feel the urge to say something along the lines of, “snap out of it” or “get over it.” Unfortunately, it’s not that easy, and statements like that can make a person feel like they’re a failure if they can’t just snap out of it. You should also stay away from phrases that perpetuate stigma, such as, “you’re acting crazy.” Your word choices can have an impact, both negative and positive, as can your actions.
